Are You Tired of Being Sick and Tired?

Feeling exhausted? Getting sick all of the time? These days, it seems like the norm—but aren’t you tired of being sick and tired?

Back in my late twenties and early thirties, I was a sick and tired person, too. I was so unhealthy because of years of terrible eating, no exercise, and lots of antibiotics. I had no energy, no mental clarity, had mood swings and depression, sleep issues, and cravings that led to overeating and weight gain, acne and thinning hair. I had blood sugar swings, insulin sensitivity, candida/yeast overgrowth, and GI issues like gas, bloating, constipation, and pain. I later learned I had thyroid and adrenal dysfunction, mitral valve prolapse, hypoglycemia, and osteopenia. How much more could my body take?

Like many, I was too busy, or too tired, or too scared, to get to the root of the problem. But finally, I got tired of being sick and tired. I found a nutritionist and a few “outside of the box” medical doctors who started me on my journey back to good health. This is what led me to finding my passion and getting my master’s in clinical nutrition. And guess what I discovered on that journey? All my “symptoms” were connected.

• Do you have chronic GI issues that are relieved only by Miralax or Mylanta? These are “symptoms.” The question is WHY are you having these issues?

• Do you pick up every cold, virus, and infection that’s going around and take the prescribed medications or over-the-counter stuff? WHY are you so susceptible?

• Do you take Benadryl or melatonin every night to sleep? They work, but WHY are you not able to fall asleep on your own?

Finding the answers to these kinds of questions is essential to achieving optimum health. Our bodies are complex and all the parts are meant to work together. When one part isn’t functioning well, it’s important to address the symptoms, but it’s even more important to discover the root cause and figure out WHY that part isn’t functioning well.

It takes patience, work and the right practitioners to help get to the bottom of our health issues. I’ve spent years experimenting with different varieties and combinations of foods. I’ve been on and off gluten, gone back and forth between dairy and dairy-free. I’ve increased and decreased protein and healthy fats. I gave up animal protein only to add it back when I realized my body needed it. And, I’m always looking for ways to have a sweet treat that won’t trigger my sugar addiction.

Suffice it to say, this experimentation proves that one size does NOT fit all. Body chemistry is unique to every individual, and therefore, everyone’s nutritional needs are different. What works for your best friend or for me may not work for you.

I feel better now at age 60 than I did when I was 25. Why? Because I identified which foods were holding me hostage and making me crave; hyping me up then making me crash; keeping me awake and anxious only to leave me bleary-eyed and exhausted the next day. I learned which nutrients I simply couldn’t get through food and needed to supplement. And finally, I learned what type of exercise works best for my body and my lifestyle.
